‘Dark Winds’: the western thriller series climbing the Netflix charts
Hypothetically, if Netflix users were given an ultimatum to choose just one genre while the others fade into oblivion forever, they would probably select thrillers with eyes blindfolded. Wonder why? Because no matter what season or time of the year, thrillers have a hold that never loosens its grip, as is evident from the uptick of Dark Winds on the streaming charts.
In the week dated September 29th to October 5th, the Western thriller series was spotted storming the global top ten shows chart on Netflix. Having amassed 2.8million views this week, this noir project is currently ranked seventh on the list as the top ten shows in 28 countries at the moment.
Although Dark Winds is not exactly a recent release, it’s one of those cornerstone content from AMC that has seen quick consecutive renewals. But on Netflix, it’s the first season that is presently rising through the ranks, meaning viewers are probably in on a recap before the show returns with a fourth instalment.
Created by Graham Roland, Dark Winds is a genre-defying crime thriller based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novel series, starring an ensemble primarily made up of Native Americans. Set against the Four Corners region of the American Southwest in the 1970s, the psychological drama opens with a double homicide and armoured truck heist witnessed by a Navajo elder.
But three weeks later, when he is found brutally killed along with his granddaughter, Lieutenant Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police is summoned to get to the roots of the ruthless murder. He is eventually joined by his deputy, Jim Chee, and something tells the two that both cases aren’t separate but connected.
However, if you think Dark Winds is just another tale of crime and corruption, save some room for the unthinkable. The Western thriller was earlier renewed for a fourth season in February, ahead of the third season premiere. And the recent boost in viewership on Netflix proves that the streaming visibility is paying off in gold, drawing more and more viewers by the minute.
Dark Winds is a gripping psychological thriller that peels back the layers of cultural identity, spirituality, and redemption in the 1970s Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, where those responsible for investigating the series of murders must confront and challenge their own belief system to solve the central mystery. The AMC show boasts a glowing 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But if you’re yet to catch up with it, the first season is currently streaming on Netflix.
