The only romance drama you need to watch this weekend: ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’
If you are sitting around wondering what to watch on Netflix this weekend, just stop overthinking and put on Crazy, Stupid, Love because this film is such a wild little gift that is guaranteed to freshen up your mood the second you press play.
We are dead serious. This film hits you out of the blue with that perfect rom-com energy, with family drama and an awesome focus on both romance and comedy. And of course, there is Ryan Gosling, walking around with the confidence of a man who has never had a bad day in his life.
The whole thing kicks off with Steve Carell’s Cal sitting in a restaurant, trying to enjoy dessert, and his wife drops a bomb on him. And I swear, the way this man malfunctions? You want to reach into the screen and want to check on him. He is shattered; he has no plan. So much so that even his shoes look depressed.
And then Ryan Gosling strolls in as Jacob Palmer, dripping charm, clearly bored, clearly beautiful, and completely ready to adopt this lost man as a personal project. Talk about a wake-up call. When Jacob says Cal needs a makeover, he is not pulling his leg… he means business.
And damn, the transformation? A piece of cake for Jacob. Cal goes from dad jeans to someone you would absolutely text at midnight, even though you know you should not, and the funniest part is that he has no idea how powerful he suddenly is. But this is not even the juicy part. The juicy part is Emma Stone as Hannah, who walks into Jacob’s perfect little world and knocks him off balance so hard he practically forgets how to flirt.
The chemistry between those two? Oh my god. You can deny it all you want, but once they do that Dirty Dancing lift, you are done. There is a reason everyone brings up that scene. It hits the spot every single time. And another reason to watch this scene at least thrice in a row is that it will heal that soul-etched wound La La Land gave you with the same two people.
But this movie is not only flirting and red lips and dramatic lighting; it actually has a real story holding it up. Cal is desperately trying to fix his life, Jacob is accidentally catching feelings, and Hannah is trying to figure out what she wants. And then that backyard fight scene? Be so for real. That moment is worth the entire runtime. Everyone’s secrets fall apart at the exact same time, and you just sit there laughing exactly like Ryan Gosling from the meme from this film (iykyk).
The best part of Crazy, Stupid, Love is that the cast works together in a way that each person understood the assignment and went harder than they needed to just for fun.
So if you want a movie that keeps you laughing and gasping, then Crazy, Stupid, Love is your weekend plan. It is a sweet and funny movie that’ll also help you take a break from all the action flicks Netflix is throwing at us right now.
