The terrible sci-fi film soaring to the top of the Netflix charts

Netflix has an abundance of sci-fi films and TV shows as the audience members seem to have a soft spot for such content. In 2021, the theme of the apocalypse was quite well-received, especially with Adam McKay’s disaster satirical comedy film Don’t Look Up, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep and more.

It was a polarising climate change allegory that commented on the capitalistic society and the shocking socio-political response of the government and media in the wake of impending doom.

It was followed by the South Korean series The Silent Sea, starring Gong Yoo, that saw a group of astronauts going to a lunar facility to save humankind from the brink of destruction.

One such 2021 film that has the theme of an inevitable apocalypse and requires protecting humanity, is now soaring charts on Netflix despite its low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Tim Fehlbaum, The Colony is a sci-fi film whose opening title reads “Climate Change. Pandemics. War.”- referring to the various events plaguing Earth that prompt the elite of humankind to flee to Kepler 209 to save themselves.

Following a surge of infertility, when an astronaut is sent on a harrowing mission to seek out new life, she makes unimaginable discoveries that change the fate of mankind forever.

The mass exodus serves as a commentary on colonisation and colonisers and the brutal and vicious lust for power. Despite its low ratings, it seems to have piqued Netflix users’ interests as it has topped charts in the United States for quite some time.
