Charlie Brooker on future of ‘Black Mirror’ ahead of Netflix season seven premiere
Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has revealed that he wants the programme to run for as long as possible ahead of the launch of the seventh series.
The hit programme, which grapples with dystopian themes, began life on Channel 4 in 2011 which was its home for the first three series before moving to Netflix in 2016. Since transferring to a wider audience, the budget for the show has grown immensely and has also allowed the series to gain an international appeal outside the UK.
Now, in a new interview with the BBC, Brooker revealed that he wants to continue making Black Mirror for as long as the demand continues, noting: “Hopefully [it will run and run]. Selfishly, it’s a fun job. Technology is developing in the real world very quickly. That means there are more sources of inspiration, and… the viewer is experiencing more [technological] things in their everyday life.”
Brooker continued: “We can do stories that I wouldn’t have thought of 10 years ago, and also, you don’t need to explain some of the concepts to people because they’ve got it in their phone.”
On the theme of technology, Brooker touched upon the growth of artificial intelligence in the mainstream since the last series of Black Mirror, explaining why it is a double-edged sword: “I can totally see the value of AI as a tool for creative people. The point at which it worries me is if you remove the people bit from that equation, or you’re just hoovering up their work and regurgitating it, and they’re not being paid.”
Will Poulter, Paul Giamatti, Awkwafina, Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Chris O’Dowd, Rashida Jones, and Issa Rae are among the stars who feature in the seventh season of Black Mirror.
Black Mirror season seven premieres on Netflix globally on April 10th, 2025.
