Catherine Tate's new Netflix comedy 'Hard Cell': First look images arrive

It feels like it has been a long time since Catherine Tate began wowing audiences in Britain with her brutal and bombastic sketch show. Featuring some expertly crafted cultural icons, Tate became one of the hottest properties in television before moving into new realms of drama and cinema. Now, Tate is set to return to the big screen as part of her legendary ‘Nan’ role with The Nan Movie.

But, before that, the comedian has shared first look images of her new Netflix show ‘Hard Cell’. The six-part sitcom will see Tate going back to her roots as she embodies all of the characters on the mockumentary focused on the British prison system.

The mockumentary is set across a six-week period at the fictional HMP Woldsley. It’s a particularly interesting period for the prisoners as they get ready for an upcoming rehearsal featuring ex-Eastenders star Cheryl Ferguson.

“Rehearsals draw together an oddball collection of women as they find their voices, grow in confidence, and strengthen their friendships,” the synopsis suggests. “Funny yet surprisingly moving, Hard Cell leans into the comical truth of prison life.”

Included in the list of interesting characters from Tate for the show is Ros, a “popular, bouncy inmate” who is conning her pen-pal boyfriend. Ros’ mother and “mean ex-con” also visits the prison but only when she’s out of money.

Perhaps the central figure of the show is Laura, the governor of HMP Woldsley, who thinks creativity is the key to prisoner rehabilitation. It’s the kind of character that Tate excels within.
