Five years after ASK agency closed its doors, fans finally meet Andréa Martel amid a turbulent period of professional and personal reinvention in Call My Agent! The Movie, on Netflix.

When the French series concluded after its four-season run, ASK was effectively finished, and Andréa understood how much personal toll her career as an agent had taken. Determined to spend more time with her daughter and make amends with Colette, she set sights on a career change.

In the years that followed, Andréa traded the agency office for a director’s chair, and when the audience meets her, she’s getting her ducks in a row to direct her feature directorial debut. While that’s a fitting role for a control freak like her, who spent years telling actors what to do and negotiating with producers, filmmaking comes with its fair share of challenges.

Just as production is about to kick off, lead actor Laurent Lafitte leaves the project, and her relationship with the producer grows increasingly difficult, pushing her to turn to former ASK members, including Noémie, Mathias, Gabriel, Hervé, Camille, and Arlette. But does she ultimately save the movie?

While Andréa is clearly preparing to turn the page on her professional chapter in Call My Agent! The Movie, she’s not the only one. Noémie is a producer; Mathias and Camille now work for a different agency; Gabriel is an agent for Starmédia; Hervé is an actor, and Arlette is enjoying retirement.

So, when the inciting crisis brings back the old group to the forefront, especially Noémie, Andréa feels she can manipulate her way in here too. It’s important to note that Andréa’s weakness is not a lack of vision or talent; it’s her inherent urge to control everything and everyone. And the film within the film brings the ultimate reality check: she cannot negotiate everything or push everyone, every time, to do things her way.

Now, coming to the burning question on everyone’s mind, Andréa does manage to save her directorial debut once a new lead is found, albeit not in the way she probably envisioned. The replacement sparks a new set of problems as she now has to deal with lost time and money before the cameras can even begin rolling.

As chaos grows by the minute, Andréa prepares herself for the tough talk, accepting that she cannot manipulate every situation in her favour and, most importantly, she cannot separate her professional life from her private life the way she believed she could.

Plus, with an impending legal battle threatening her daughter’s custody, it’s of utmost importance for Andréa to fight to save the movie and the life she dreamed of. Therefore, she saves her directorial debut by letting go of her need to control everything and every outcome. She learns to accept help and adapts, allowing people to contribute in their unique way.
