The screens are flickering again, and that can only mean one thing: Black Mirror season eight has officially started production, with filming underway this summer as Netflix brings Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology back for another round.

There is no release date yet, naturally, but at least the new season has moved from announcement to production.

Netflix first confirmed in January that Black Mirror would return, with Brooker saying he hoped the next run would be “more Black Mirror than ever”. Seven months later, the cameras are finally rolling.

Brooker is writing and executive producing the season alongside Bisha K Ali, while Jessica Rhoades, Annabel Jones and Louise Sutton return as executive producers. The team behind the mirror is whirring away again. How lovely.

What Netflix has not handed over, of course, is the juicy bit. No cast list, episode count, story breakdown, premiere window, and not a scrap of first-look material. Honestly, the cheek of it. For a series that lives to wrong-foot viewers, the secrecy is on brand, and it leaves fans with plenty to speculate about.

Brooker has offered one small clue, saying he approaches each season like an album and thinks about what the show has not done before and what tone each story needs.

It is hardly a massive reveal we’re all hoping for, but it does suggest season eight will try something different rather than recycle the same technological fears again.

Season seven arrived in April 2025 with six episodes and brought Black Mirror back towards its science fiction roots, while also giving us the show’s first proper sequel with USS Callister: Into Infinity. Brooker has since suggested he would not rule out returning to older stories again.

For now, Black Mirror season eight is filming, and Brooker is back at the controls. And since there is no reveal about anything else, fans are left staring into the black screen, wondering what fresh nightmare is about to blink back.
