‘Black Doves’ season 2 is now filming in London with new faces

When Black Doves dropped last year, it did not enter Netflix with a loud bang. But then… then it absolutely took over every conversation. People were recommending it to their friends before they even finished episode two, and why not? The mix of espionage and style, with Keira Knightley being effortlessly intense, made the first season feel fresher.

Sure, there are quite a lot of spy dramas out there, but Black Doves hit the magic spot. And now, the update everyone has been impatiently waiting for: Black Doves season two is now filming in London with new faces joining the ride. The cast is back in the city’s alleys, corridors, safehouses and expensive-looking restaurants, shooting the next round of brand new secrets, betrayals and tonnes of political tension.

This season picks up with Helen (Knightley) still juggling her messy double life, which involves sharing state secrets with the Black Doves while trying to keep her marriage steady. Except her husband, Wallace, is now on track to become prime minister, so yes, her stress levels are through the roof. She is walking a thinner line than ever, and the stakes feel sharper this time.

Her handler, Mrs Reed (Sarah Lancashire), has her own storm brewing. Someone inside the Black Doves is trying to undercut her power, and you can already tell it will not be subtle. Lancashire played Mrs Reed with so much quiet menace in season one that watching her get dragged into a deeper conspiracy is going to be very satisfying.

Then we have Sam (Ben Whishaw), Helen’s best friend and former triggerman, who is not exactly thriving these days. Last season ended with him bruised, confused and lonely, and this season throws him back into Helen’s world just when he thinks he has hit the lowest point. The two of them teaming up again is already a win because their dynamic was one of the best parts of the first season.

Who is joining the cast this time?

Ah! The awaited question. First things first, we have Ambika Mod joining as Laila, playing a sharp-tongued Black Doves agent who is supposed to “help” Helen. We all know help in this show usually means creating more mess plus paperwork. Then there is Babou Ceesay as Mr Conteh, whose motives already sound questionable. Sam Riley is stepping in as Patrick, someone who offers Sam a mysterious lifeline. Well, to be honest, that could mean anything in this universe, from a job offer to yet another moral dilemma.

And yes, Neve Campbell is in the cast this time. If you grew up watching her slay through entire franchises, it is time to upgrade and watch her enter a political spy thriller. Sylvia Hoeks is also joining as Katia Chernov, which guarantees tension. Goran Kostic and Samuel Barnett round out the list, making season two look completely stacked.

The creators sound thrilled, and Netflix UK has gone wild. But if someone’s more excited than these two, it’s the fandom that already has theories popping up all over the place. Looks like season two is ready to raise the temperature.
