‘Billionaires’ Bunker’: the Spanish thriller climbing the Netflix charts
Many genres come and go on Netflix like shooting stars in the sky. But the sky is definitely not the limit for the trend of thrillers, whether it’s shows or movies. Amidst the full-blown rollout season on Netflix, all eyes are set on a Spanish thriller, Billionaires’ Bunker, and here’s what you need to know.
In the week dated September 15th to September 21st, the Netflix series shot up to the second position on the top ten most popular non-English TV shows chart. With 3.7million views garnered this week alone, Billionaires’ Bunker is presently the number one show in three countries, including Spain, Hungary, and Ukraine.
Created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato of Money Heist for Netflix, Billionaires’ Bunker takes place three years after a billionaire’s son, Max, is convicted of a life sentence following a drunken car crash which killed his girlfriend. With a nuclear war now imminent, his father, Rafa, brings him out of prison to have his entire family escape to a palatial lockup.
Despite begging Max to join them at Kimera Underground Park, which is enough to accommodate 45 families, he’s reluctant. But that’s only until he learns that his girlfriend’s family, including his sister Asia and father Guillermo, will be present. The prospect of reuniting with his own family, apologising to Guillermo and reconciling with Asia pushes him to ultimately accept the offer.
But what starts out as a few weeks-long escape plan for their own safety soon spirals into a doomsday scenario. Both families try to make amends and work through their blame games. However, when the nuclear bombs start piling up, the wealthiest and most prosperous families of the country hold witness in absolute horror as the world nears an end.
Surviving the disaster now totally hinges on the enigmatic woman who overlooks Kimera, but also on the unforeseen alliances born out of the catastrophe. For those unaware, Billionaires’ Bunker was filmed in Spain in an underground bunker constructed 1,000 feet below a lake. The thriller series was released on Netflix on September 19th.
And so far, the response has been quite promising. So, in case you were not caught up with it, tune into Billionaires’ Bunker since the spoilers wait for none.
