Billie Piper escapes a ‘Wednesday’ death trend
Wednesday is nothing without a fair dose of body counts. From the first to the second season, the Netflix black comedy series lives up to its gory reputation, except for Billie Piper, who portrays Isadora Capri.
With Piper’s Isadora, Wednesday has excused a long-standing tradition, that of killing the character just before the curtain pulls over. Whether Netflix had a change of heart or it softened to make space for the calm before a storm can be very well up for debate. But it sure makes room for a difference in comparison to the other character arcs that have come and gone.
Wednesday’s second season concluded with quite a few tenterhooks with the titular character speeding off to the wild north in search of her best friend-turned-alpha wolf, Enid Sinclair. Meanwhile, Tyler left the town of Jericho with Isadora, leaving more questions than answers in every mind.
Wednesday has a way with its characters, who are anything but ordinary. Each is eccentric and serves a purpose within the show. But before you know it, they end up eaten by zombies, killed by an avian, or turn up dead at the hands of the mighty Hyde. This is particularly true for the second season, where the Netflix series welcomed a range of characters only to cut short their arcs within the show with a sweeping conclusion.
The second season doesn’t waste time throwing Haley Joel Osment’s the Kansas City Scalper and Anthony Michael Hall’s Ron Kruger at death’s door. And the deaths aren’t exactly surprising. But it also doesn’t make an exception for the Addams Family veterans Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ricci, who portray Professor Orloff and Marilyn Thornhill, respectively.
Besides them, Wednesday’s season two newcomers, Steve Buscemi’s Principal Barry Dort, Heather Matarazzo’s Judi Spannagel, Owen Painter’s Slurp/Isaac Night, Thandiwe Newton’s Dr Rachel Fairburn, Casper Van Dien’s Gideon Sterling, and Frances O’Connor’s Francoise Galpin are also short-lived characters. But contrary to Isadora’s most co-stars this season, Piper’s presence becomes far more significant, especially with her survival.
With Isadora extending a hand of help towards Tyler, or so we saw, they both drive towards a clandestine location where Hydes can live without masters. Although Evie Templeton’s Agnes DeMille survives the season too, something raises eyebrows about Piper’s Isadora Capri. But whether it’s just an apprehension or a crystal ball prophecy, only time will reveal. Because, believe it or not, Wednesday doesn’t take the road less travelled without reason.
