‘Big Mistakes’ ending explained: Who is the actual villain?

Nobody does better justice to the “family in crisis” trope than Dan Levy, and thankfully, he’s back with the familiar chaos this week in a crime-comedy series for Netflix, Big Mistakes.

“The craziest times I’ve had with my family have ultimately led to the biggest laughs. I love writing the humanity and humour that is squeezed out of some of our tensest moments as families,” Levy said, in a recent interview with TIME. While that’s particularly true in the case of the fan-favourite sitcom Schitt’s Creek, which he co-created with his father Eugene Levy, the same also applies to his latest Netflix series.

Big Mistakes follows two incredibly incapable siblings, pastor Nicky and school teacher Morgan, who steal a necklace from a gift shop for their dying grandmother, only to find themselves eventually navigating the hot waters of the drug trade and the dangers of organised crime. Although the duo is blackmailed into working for the mafia, something that’s clearly worlds apart from them, the real villain is actually way closer to their home than they think.

With the Brazilian and Russian cartels taking each other out in the penultimate episode, the anticipation of bliss is upended by the siblings’ kidnapping upon their return to Miami. Then, who is the real villain?

The actual villain of Big Mistakes

The people behind Nicky and Morgan’s kidnapping in Big Mistakes were actually Italian mobsters, led by Yusuf, who eventually let them go, assuring to get in touch with them soon. After the incident, Nicky breaks up with Tareq, hoping to protect him, while Morgan looks forward to ending things with Max, her partner of 17 years. But the latter’s plan unravels when Morgan accidentally runs him over with their car at the grocery store.

Luckily for both, he only suffered some minor injuries. The only bright side of the entire ordeal is the news of Nicky and Morgan’s mother, Linda, winning her race for mayor. As they all make their way to Linda’s best friend and Max’s mother, Annette’s home to celebrate, the actual villain is finally unveiled.

After Morgan is called upstairs by Annette, a sudden change in her traits raises eyebrows. “You will be marrying my son,” she tells, or more like commands Morgan and before she can say anything back, Annette shows her a necklace, the one Morgan stole earlier in Big Mistakes, in her safe. Annette reveals that the only reason Nicky and Morgan made it through the Miami shootout is that she wanted them to.

The plot twist comes with its fair share of soft threats for the siblings and ends with a family picture they will remember for a lifetime. So, if you still think nothing peaks your family drama, let Big Mistakes change your mind.
