Ben Wheatley's Cillian Murphy-starring 'Free Fire' arrives on Netflix UK

Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, starring Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy and Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson, has arrived on Netflix in the UK.

The 2017 action comedy, from the Kill List and Sightseers director, is set in 1970s Boston, and follows a black market weapons deal between the buyer, Chris (Cillian Murphy) and Vernon, the dealer (Sharlto Copley) that goes fatally wrong and unfolds into a large-scale shootout. In the movie, Larson plays Justine, the intermediary in the meeting.

Alongside Murphy, Copley and Larson, the likes of Wheatley regular Michael Smiley, and Sam Riley, Enzo Cilenti, Noah Taylor and Tom Davis appear. Notably, Smiley stars in Kill List and A Field in England.

Free Fire was a flop at the box office, taking $3.8 million worldwide from a $7 million budget, but it still retains a critics score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. Speaking to The Guardian in 2017, Wheatley explained how he first built the set in the game Minecraft: “Lots of maps, lots of building. First, I built the set in Minecraft in 3D, so as to be able to walk around the space and ensure that everyone was in the right position.”

In other Netflix news, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has made Emmy history as the youngest Latina to receive a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress (Comedy) category this week.

The 20-year-old actor earned the nomination for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s record-breaking series, Wednesday. Ortega’s inclusion in the list of nominees is a milestone moment for Latina representation in television.
