‘Bandi’: The only Netflix thriller you need to watch this weekend

Netflix has given birth to quite a few chaotic family dramas, capturing diverse characters, relationships, and quirks. But if you want your weekend dose of drama to follow in the footsteps, bearing the twist of a gritty thriller, Bandi is just what you’re looking for.

The French Caribbean thriller is a heavy-hitter for a weekend binge, which puts the do-or-die nature of families into practice under the most extreme circumstances.

Bandi is an eight-episode French-language thriller set in Martinique that hit Netflix shelves recently on April 9th. It essentially moves past the quirky/funny side to embrace the extreme chaotic aspect of family dramas, so if you enjoy high-stakes dramas involving blood relations and don’t mind the subtitles, it’s perfect for a binge.

The series follows 11 orphaned siblings, between seven and 23, struggling to survive on their own after the tragic accident of their family matriarch on her way to work. Despite their age and innocence, they must make ends meet and, most importantly, do enough to keep their younger siblings out of foster care.

But as is the case with most sibling stories, discord is a given, and the primary disagreement between them is about how to keep themselves financially stable.

While some choose to honour the moral code their mother taught, choosing legal ways, others are alright with opting for criminal and underhand methods. However, little do they know that one of their younger brothers, Kylian, is already a top player in Martinique’s drug trade, who is looking to expand internationally.

Whether he manages to achieve his odd dreams or puts his siblings on a united front is for you to find out. Plus, there’s no guaranteeing whether these are the only ways Bandi will unfold.

In addition to the show’s gripping premise, we need a minute of silence for the backdrop of Martinique, which serves as a sharp contrast to the gritty crime element, making it extraordinarily visually appealing.

Although Bandi is not exactly a light watch, carrying substance and quality, it fits the bill of a perfect weekend escape, defying language barriers with top-notch storytelling. So, in case you’re having second thoughts, consider this your go-ahead.
