‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ season two ending explained: What happens to Aang?
The second season of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Avatar Aang and his friends Katara and Sokka on their adventures into the Earth Kingdom, where they try to kill two birds with one stone: master the art of earthbending and persuade the Earth King to back them up in their war against the Fire Nation.
On their journey, they recruit a blind earthbending prodigy, Toph, to help Aang add earthbending to his powers of waterbending and airbending, while unmasking a massive conspiracy involving Long Feng and the king’s guard, Dai Li, threatening the city of Ba Sing Se. Although Team Avatar tries to warn King Kuei about the conspiracy, everything backfires, resulting in their capture and subsequent imprisonment.
But Aang successfully saves the day, not only rescuing his friends but also reuniting with a captured Appa. Team Avatar tries to find the exit through a Crystal Cavern, but Azula interferes with the plan. As Sokka assists Sai to safety, Aang and Katara confront the lightningbender. And to ensure the fight is fair, Zuko enters, taking practically everyone aback, but most importantly, Katara. As the fight intensifies, it’s not long before it’s Katara vs Zuko.
Meanwhile, Aang tries to subdue Azula using crystal armour. However, it’s of no use, and he’s knocked to the ground. With Dai Li now on the scene, surrounding Katara, everything looks done for until Aang enters his Avatar state. So, does that mean Aang survives?
What happens to Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender season two?
After entering the Avatar state, Aang doesn’t flinch before blasting off Dai Li and Zuko with a whirlwind of air, earth, and waterbending in the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. While it’s clear that Azula also stands no chance in front of the Avatar, it’s Aang’s humanity that shields Azula at the end of the day as he hesitates to kill her. But Azula seizes that very moment, hitting him through the chest with a lightning bolt.
Aang is knocked to the ground, and a reminder chimes in: “If you die in the Avatar state, the cycle will cease, and the world will fall out of balance forever.” As Katara rushes to Aang, Azula takes a position to attack her as well. However, Iroh arrives just in time, rescuing Katara and covering Aang’s escape, despite becoming a prisoner of the Fire Nation.
As the Fire Nation forces fully infiltrate Ba Sing Se, the Gaang escapes on Air Appa, with Katara desperately trying to revive Aang using the remaining water from the Spirit Oasis. While he briefly gains consciousness or seems so, he once again goes senseless with his fate hanging in the balance. In fact, the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender pulls the curtain as Katara begs Aang to wake up.
Surprisingly, the Netflix series deviates from the events of the animated show, raising even more confusion in viewers. The animated series originally had the season conclude with Aang in recovery. However, in the Netflix show, Katara’s healing water doesn’t seem to work, and nobody knows what lies in his future.
It is possible that Netflix is opting for a realistic approach, and the water may have worked, meaning it’s taking a considerable time to do its thing. If not, there may be something else we might be surprised to learn. However, to know for sure, everyone will have to hold their horses until season three.
