Asa Butterfield and Christopher Eccleston announced for new Netflix psychological thriller

It has recently been announced that production has begun on a new six-part thriller for Netflix, Out of the Dust, centring around one woman’s life-changing journey towards liberation. The series will feature Molly Windsor as the main character, Rosie, with Asa Butterfield playing her husband, Adam.

Alongside them, Christopher Eccleston and Siobhan Finneran will appear as Mr and Mrs Phillips, while Fra Free plays Sam, the catalyst for Rosie’s sudden awakening. Out of the Dust is set in a strict Christian cult where Rosie and Adam live, but everything changes when Rosie happens to meet Sam, who has a dangerous history.

The official synopsis reads: “Rosie lives with her husband Adam and daughter in a cloistered Christian community. The fateful arrival of escaped prisoner Sam into her life, reveals the reality and restraints of her world; perhaps this hidden religious community doesn’t have her best interests at heart.”

It continues: “And, as the cracks begin to appear in her marriage, Sam presents as her saviour. But with his dark criminal past, where does the greatest danger lie – with the cult or with Sam?”

Seemingly, there will be plenty of drama as Rosie finds herself caught between traditionalism, security, and the familiarity of her present situation and the danger, excitement, and liberation of starting a new life. Posing the question of which option will ultimately benefit her most, Out of Dust is set to challenge viewers while also providing thrilling entertainment.

The series is being directed by Philippa Langdale, who has previously helmed episodes of A Discovery of Witches, and Jim Loach, the director of Criminal Record (and Ken Loach’s son). It has been written by Julie Gearey, who also penned Intergalactic, the Sky Original sci-fi series which aired in 2021.

The project comes after Butterfield’s acclaimed performance in the hit Netflix show Sex Education, where he played the main character, Otis. Meanwhile, Windsor has recently starred in the Oscar-nominated film She Said and the 2019 television adaptation of War of the Worlds. She previously worked with Loach when he directed her in 2010’s Oranges and Sunshine.

The show, which is being executive-produced by Iona Vrolyk and Myar Craig-Brown, has only just started filming, so there is no word on an official release date just yet.
