Antony Starr to star in the new Netflix show called ‘Breakers’
Stop what you are doing and read this because Netflix just dropped a bomb: Antony Starr, the man who is better known as Homelander, is now starring in a Netflix series that has nothing to do with superheroes and everything to do with menacing surf vibes. This crossover is so peak because nobody thought about it.
Starr is going to be a part of a show called Breakers, and if you read nothing else, know this: it is being filmed right in Western Australia with real saltwater beaches and real surf quests that look like paradise but are probably hiding deep secrets.
The plot is set up so casually that you never realise it is hiding so many things. Two backpackers head to a coastal surfing community that seems perfect, like postcard-perfect, like “you will never want to leave” perfect. But then you see Brando, the character played by Antony Starr, who is that charismatic force who looks easy to trust, but you sense, maybe too late, that everyone here has a story that might hurt.
Antony Starr’s involvement is what makes this leap off the script and into your brain. The guy who tore through The Boys with a glare that has haunted you in your dreams has now stepped into a very different genre, and already the anticipation is insane. Brando is described as the leader of this surfing enclave, and knowing Starr’s energy, you just feel that he will own every scene. The ocean waves have got some scary competition.
The creative team behind Breakers is just as tight. Pete Jackson is writing, who is also the guy behind Somewhere Boy and The Death of Bunny Munro, so you already know it is going to mess with your brain. Directing? Mary Nighy from Industry and Ng Choon Ping from Femme. And the producers? They are the same crew who gave us Baby Reindeer and The End of the F**ing World*, which means it is going to be as messed up as it gets. If the sun is shining, it is probably lying.
What makes Breakers already feel like a phenomenon before a single trailer has dropped is how it is toying with our expectations. The concept of a surf community is usually tied to freedom, but when you put someone like Starr at the centre of that world, it feels like a trap. People already talking about this show have started floating theories about whether the community is a cult or a secret society.
We don’t have a release date yet, which only fuels the frenzy because everyone wants to know when this wave crashes into Netflix. And the fact that this is one of the first major series filmed in Western Australia for the platform is only making fans more invested.
So keep an eye out. Homelander has left the skies and touched the water, and whatever he brings to Breakers is probably going to be CRAZY.
