Another action thriller to watch if you loved ‘The Rip’

As soon as the new year kicked in, Netflix dropped a bomb by reuniting the dynamic duo of Tinseltown, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, for The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan. But if you’re still not over the action fever, Netflix has just the action thriller stored in line for you, yet another Carnahan directorial, Copshop.

In the week from February 2nd to February 8th, the neo-noir action thriller debuted with 3.1million views on the most popular movies chart globally, ranking ninth. Meanwhile, in the US, Copshop is ranked third on the charts.

Netflix added Copshop to its US library on 1st February, and clearly, subscribers wouldn’t have it any other way. And since it arrived on the heels of The Rip making waves on Netflix, fans have been welcoming the action thriller with open arms.

Directed by Carnahan, based on a story by Kurt McLeod and Mark Williams, Copshop is a gritty thriller styled in the DNA of 70s action movies, which follows a con artist, Teddy Murretto, who stage-manages his own arrest to avoid getting caught by a dangerous hitman, Bob Viddick, in a small-town Nevada police station.

To hide from Viddick, Murretto throws a punch at a rookie cop, ultimately landing himself in a holding cell. However, in a plot twist that Murretto probably didn’t anticipate, Viddick makes his next move according to his enemy’s game. Instead of giving up on his search, Viddick also gets himself arrested for drunk driving to access the station and ultimately kill Murretto.

While The Rip was all about cop drama, fading loyalties, and finding a mole within, Copshop erupts in an explosive showdown as a second hitman shows up to finish the job Viddick started. However, the situation spirals into unprecedented chaos, resulting in a violent clash between wits and firepower, setting the stage for a high-stakes, adrenaline-pumping curveball.

Surprisingly, Copshop originally bombed at the box office in 2021, which was influenced by a mix of poor timing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and theatre restrictions. However, it received rave reviews from critics on aggregate review sites such as Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently holds a strong 83% rating. Although this polarity of response is not exactly new, with its availability on Netflix, the audience is visibly ready to give it another shot and decide for themselves.

Just in case that’s not convincing enough, Copshop also excels in star power, featuring Hollywood titans such as Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, and Alexis Louder.

So, for those wondering which punch-fest to land on next on Netflix, Copshop is the only way to go.
