‘Amsterdam Empire’: the Dutch crime drama climbing the Netflix charts

Netflix is never short of crime dramas that grab the eye, and the one on which viewers have set their sights currently is Amsterdam Empire.

In the week dated November 3rd to November 9th, Amsterdam Empire was spotted rising through the ranks on the ten most popular non-English series Netflix chart globally.

Having amassed 2.7million views alone this week, it is now the number one show in two countries. It is positioned sixth on the global charts for its second week, which is proof that the audience is far from done with the series.

Amsterdam Empire is a recently released Dutch crime drama starring Famke Janssen as the Amsterdam “It” girl, Betty Jonkers. The ex-pop star-turned-model has long left her life of stardom to marry a cannabis coffee shop tycoon, the well-known owner of The Jackal, Jack von Doorn. Although she traded her life of glitz and glamour to find wedding bliss, her years-long marriage confronts some unexpected thorns in the way when she discovers that Jack hasn’t exactly been loyal.

In fact, Jack is anything but fully invested in Betty, having been involved in an illicit affair with journalist Marjolein Hofman. Betty doesn’t believe in simple confrontations. So, she takes out her rage on his Rolls-Royce’s windows instead. However, despite her furious outburst, the meeting makes one thing crystal clear: Jack’s affair with Marjolein is far from the fleeting fling she mistook it for.

Jack is determined to be with Marjolein, and clearly, he’s head over heels for her, which means his divorce from Betty is imminent. But Betty isn’t one to let her revenge-driven heart go unfulfilled. So, as Jack leaves their marital home for good, Betty boils with vengeance, swearing to take everything he’s built from brick, everything significant and not.

This means Jack’s well-built career and cannabis empire are in inevitable danger. And to give Betty an upper hand in her goal, she knows just how many skeletons are hidden in his closet. The question that looms at large is whether Jack has it in him to outwit his soon-to-be ex-wife and save his career and reputation, or is it Betty with the last laugh?

Besides Janssen, Amsterdam Empire features Jacob Derwig as Jack, Elise Schnapp as Marjolein, Jade Olieberg as Katja van Doorn, and Bart Slegers as Gijs Tichelaar. The Dutch drama comes from the creative trio behind Undercover, Ferry, Ferry: The Series, and Ferry 2: Piet Matthys, Nico Moolenar, and Bart Uytdenhouwen.

The series hit Netflix shelves on October 30th, and if you haven’t watched it, this is your reminder to do it now!
