The Netflix Oscar hopeful All Quiet on the Western Front is due to be getting the Blu-ray treatment, with a high-definition physical release due to hit shelves in the next coming months.
Nominated for nine Academy Awards whilst winning seven BAFTAs, including ‘Best Film’, Edward Berger’s movie has emerged as an unlikely contender for the biggest prizes at the 2023 Oscars. Based on the 1930 ‘Best Picture’ winner of the same name, which is itself based on the iconic novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the latest film is a marvel of modern special effects.
Telling the story of a young German soldier’s experiences during his draft onto the western front during WWI, the anti-war story is filled with graphic imagery and a heart-wrenching narrative so powerful that it has earned the production team a ‘Best Picture’ Oscar nomination. Starring Felix Kammerer as the young boy at the centre of the film, the movie also features the likes of Albrecht Schuch, Edin Hasanovic, Daniel Brühl and Sebastian Hülk.
Eager fans of the forthcoming Blu-ray will be excited to hear that the two-disc limited collector’s edition will include the film in 4K Ultra HD and UHD Blu-ray, and will be packed with a load of special features. The new release will include audio commentary with director Edward Berger and a 24-page booklet that includes Sharing the German Perspective, a written discussion with the filmmaker.
Giving the film a four-star review, we wrote: “Evidently proficient in its cinematic ambition, the grand scale of the battle sequences is the film’s most clear asset, creating a cauldron of fear, trepidation and hopelessness that pervades the story like a thick fog of horror. Indeed, war movies have a moral obligation to depict war as viscerally terrifying as it truly is, translating its frantic brutality with immersive set pieces, but it’s in the minute details where All Quiet on the Western Front really excels”.
