Alicia Vikander enters ‘Enigma Variations’ adaptation following Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Netflix is gearing up for its Enigma Variations adaptation based on the author of Call Me by Your Name, André Aciman’s eponymous bestselling book, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson confirmed to play the lead. And in a major recent update, Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander has officially joined the highly anticipated limited series.

Enigma Variations is scheduled to go into production in July 2026, and the cast announcement arrives just in time.

For those uninitiated, the Nosferatu actor will star as Paul in Enigma Variations, which will follow the character through various, often fleeting, romantic encounters as a man “remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across six transformative years.”

Vikander will star as Claire in what’s described as a minute yet “sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love,” set in a world spoiled with choices where the ultimate dilemma is whether we would know when we find the one.

Claire is one of Paul’s romantic interests with whom he ties the knot in the novel, amidst his sexually fluid relationships.

Vikander, who won the Academy Award for The Danish Girl, comes fresh off her stint in The Wizard of the Kremlin, where she starred opposite Black Rabbit actor Jude Law. She also recently made her UK theatre debut in The Lady From the Sea.

In addition to nabbing a role in Enigma Variations, the 37-year-old actor has a packed year ahead with Na Hong-jin’s Hope, Andrea Pallaoro’s The Echo Chamber, and Rachel Rose’s The Last Day. Currently, she is in production on The Worst.

Media Res, the studio behind The Morning Show and Pachinko, produces the upcoming limited series, directed by Oliver Hermanus. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer executive produce Enigma Variations for Media Res alongside Aciman and Monica Levinson. Amanda Kate Shuman has written the series and serves as a co-executive producer. As for the rest of the details, stay tuned for more updates!
