Alan Ritchson eyes lead role in Netflix’s new action thriller ‘Maelstrom’

Looks like Alan Ritchson could be gearing up for another big action role. Word on the street is that he is in talks to star in Netflix’s new thriller Maelstrom, which will also see the collaboration of Netflix with Carry-On director Collet-Serra, once again.

Alan Ritchson is the man they are after for the lead role in this high-concept thriller that has been knocking about Hollywood for absolute donkey’s years before finally finding itself a home at Netflix. Talk about playing the long game.

So what’s it all about then? Well, Ritchson is lined up to play a US Federal Marshal who has got the lovely little job of protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer after she agrees to go into witness protection.

Before you process that, a massive hurricane barrels in and knocks out all communications, thus cutting them off from the outside world.

Now it’s just the two of them trying to stay alive while gunmen sent by the arms dealer are hunting them down. Honestly, if the bullets don’t get them, the weather probably will. The whole thing plays out over one long, horrible night.

Netflix only dusted off Maelstrom after Carry-On turned into one of Netflix’s biggest original hits. When something pulls in that many viewers, you start rummaging through the old ideas drawer, hoping there’s another blockbuster hiding in there. Looks like this was the one they found.

Jeff Robinov is producing alongside Tabitha Shick and Talkin’ Pictures as part of his overall Netflix deal, while Collet-Serra is back in the director’s chair after proving he knows his way around a slick action flick.

As for Alan Ritchson, this’d be another massive step after Reacher turned him into one of TV’s biggest action stars. Nothing’s signed just yet, mind you, so hold your horses, but if it all comes together, Maelstrom could end up being one of Netflix’s biggest action films on the horizon. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
