‘Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials’ ending explained: Who killed Gerry Wade?
Netflix knows well that viewers’ patience is thin when it comes to mystery thrillers. So, before we could digest the wild twists and turns Netflix brought with its latest dose of adaptations of Alice Feeney and Harlan Coben novels, we were thrust onto a new one on the map, thanks to Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials kicks off with a prank gone horrifically and murderously wrong after Gerry Wade’s Foreign Office buddies set eight alarms to teach him a lesson for always being late. But when the alarms cacophonously ring simultaneously and Gerry still doesn’t wake up, no one’s laughing anymore.
It doesn’t take long for everyone to find out that Gerry’s not been asleep; he’s been dead for some time. He’s a victim of a sleeping draught overdose, and surprisingly, one of the clocks is missing. This is what the central mystery of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, based on the Queen of Crime’s 1929 novel, The Seven Dials Mystery, is all about.
Despite warnings from friends and officials, Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent digs deeper into the investigation and soon finds out that those seven dials are a telling clue. If not, at least a deadly warning. But who is ultimately unmasked as Gerry’s killer?
Who killed Gerry Wade?
No matter what the world tells Bundle in Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, it’s hard to have her sold on the idea that Gerry killed herself. They were always close, after all, Gerry served in the Great War alongside Bundle’s late brother Tommy. Not to forget their romantic spark and the fact that Gerry also hinted at proposing to Bundle later that week. So, it’s not exactly a surprise that Bundle has a hard time coming to terms with the fact that this is the behaviour of a suicidal man.
As it turns out, Bundle’s instincts are right on point when she ends up confronting Loraine in the luggage car. Loraine was always part of the plot to steal the formula to sell it to the highest bidder. But she thought Gerry was growing suspicious day by day, so she poisoned him with an overdose of sleeping draught. But that’s not all.
Jimmy also comes into play as he’s the one to shoot Ronie, whose final words now feel like an appeal to inform the Seven Dials that Jimmy murdered him and not the other way round. Jimmy eventually confesses to shooting himself in the arm and disposing of the gun out of the window, as well as tearing the gloves off and throwing them into the fireplace.
Jimmy then shoots Bill, and he and Loraine try to flee. Thanks to Dr Matip’s pocket watch, Bill is saved. So, Bundle takes the gun and chases Jimmy. When she finds him, Jimmy is at a loss for words and explanation, as “the life of a bachelor isn’t cheap, and he needs cash from the formula.” As a result, to misdirect the investigators, he rearranged the clocks on Gerry’s mantlepiece, although he maintains that he didn’t commit the crime. In fact, the real culprit behind the scheme is at the front of the train, waiting for the package, who is none other than Lady Caterham.
