‘Adolescence’ writer announces “mysterious and unsettling” show based on best-selling novel

Jack Thorne, one of the writers on the recent Netflix hit Adolescence, has announced that he is working on a “mysterious” and “unsettling” new stage show based on a best-selling novel.

Thorne worked on the critically acclaimed Netflix drama alongside star Stephen Graham. It has been well-received globally, sparking conversations that have reached the UK parliament. Despite his success on screen, Thorne has confirmed that he wants to return to the world of theatre and will do so by creating an adaptation of John Ajvide Lingqvist’s vampire novel Let The Right One In.

This won’t be the first time the novel has been adapted, as there are two feature films and a television series based on it; however, this is the first time the novel will be re-written for the stage.

The story follows the relationship between a 12-year-old boy and his relationship with a vampire girl who has been alive for centuries. It all takes place in 1980s Stockholm.

This work of fiction is a step away from Thorne’s recent work on the hard-hitting and gritty drama Adolescence. The series was seen as so grounded and important that there are now talks about it being shown in parliament.

Prime Minister Kier Starmer confirmed he has watched the series and said, “This violence carried out by young men, influenced by what they see online, is a real problem, it’s abhorrent, and we have to tackle it.”

Thorne said he wanted to be productive during this moment when everybody was talking about the show. He said, “We can use this moment to provoke this government to consider quite serious change.”

There is no prospective release date for Thorne’s adaptation of Let The Right One In, but more information will soon follow.
