‘Adolescence’ leads the way for Netflix in Emmy nominations
The award season is once again upon us, and the roster of Primetime Emmy nominations is already out. Despite falling short in leading the streaming pack this season, Netflix roped in over 100 nominations for the eighth consecutive year. The streaming giant has reportedly received a whopping 120 nominations across 44 titles. But the most interesting nomination and perhaps the most deserving is the record-breaking one-shot limited series, Adolescence, which has achieved a milestone with 13 staggering nods.
Adolescence follows the Miller family’s complete upheaval when their 13-year-old son, Jamie, is arrested for the murder of his classmate. The show has been nominated for ‘Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, with the series creator and star, Stephen Graham, nominated for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’. Meanwhile, Erin Doherty and Christine Tremarco have both bagged nominations for ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’.
As for the 15-year-old star who left the entire world reeling, Owen Cooper has earned a historic nod in the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’ category as the youngest nominee for his first time on screen, while Ashley Walters is also nominated for the same. Besides these, Adolescence has earned a nod in categories including ‘Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series’, ‘Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’, ‘Outstanding Cinematography’, and ‘Outstanding Contemporary Costumes’, among others.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story follows next with 11 total nominations. The true-crime anthology series is giving Adolescence a run for its money alongside Black Mirror in the ‘Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series’ category. Graham is about to face some competition from Cooper Koch for the ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’ award as well.
Likewise, Chloë Sevigny is going head-to-head against Doherty and Tremarco in the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress’ category, while Javier Bardem is eyeing the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’ award. Monsters has additionally been nominated for ‘Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’, ‘Outstanding Period Costumes’, ‘Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’, and ‘Outstanding Music Composition’, among others.
Next on the lineup is Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker’s satirical anthology series with ten nominations. Some of the major categories include ‘Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series’, ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’ for Rashida Jones, ‘Outstanding Casting for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’, and ‘Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-fi Costumes’.
While Adolescence, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez prepare to hoist the award season flag, joining them side by side are The Diplomat, Nobody Wants This, The Residence, Sirens, and Queer Eye. Comedy specials like Adam Sandler: Love You, Ali Wong: Single Lady, and Sarah Silverman: PostMortem have also made it to the list, with several other iconic Netflix shows, such as Bridgerton and Emily in Paris bagging a few spots.
