‘Adolescence’ creator says social media users have shared false claims about him
The co-creator of the new Netflix drama Adolescence, Jack Thorne, has confirmed that a number of social media users have shared false claims about him after the limited series’ success.
The four-part drama follows the story of a young boy who is accused of killing his female classmate. Stephen Graham (This Is England) co-wrote and stars in the series.
The series begins with the arrest of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, played by Owen Cooper. The compelling way that the series is filmed and the engaging storyline means that Adolescence has been at the top of the most-watched programs globally and prompted questions about the subject matter in parliament.
The series looks into “incel culture”, which has been blamed for misogyny online. It provokes bullying on social media and is responsible for prejudiced views.
Jack Thorne has discussed the series’ reception and described it as “very interesting.” He confirmed that viewers have been circulating photos of him and questioning his gender.
“I’ve been on the television a little bit, and what’s been happening in the last few days is my picture is being circulated with questions (made about) my masculinity,” he said, “Questions as to whether I’ve got too much oestrogen in my system, questions whether I’m a man or not.”
He continued, “Weird things like people saying I’m Jewish, when I’m not, it’s been very odd, and it’s given me a taste of something that’s very strange […] I’m very comfortable with how I look, I don’t mind it, but it’s been scientifically very interesting.”
Thorne has suggested that the series be shown online in the British Parliament and in schools. Kier Starmer seemed to agree when he spoke during Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions.
