‘Adolescence’ is already one of Netflix’s most-watched shows
Adolescence has already become one of Netflix‘s most-watched English series since it debuted last month.
Created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, the show uses a one-shot technique each episode to follow the characters in real-time as the 13-year-old Jamie Miller is arrested on suspicion of murdering a female classmate.
The show explores the effects of the violent events on Jamie’s family, his classmates, police officers and a psychologist while dissecting the teenager’s exposure to misogynistic ‘manosphere’ content online.
Adolescence has created plenty of discussion online since it was released on March 13th, with some viewers claiming that it should be mandatory viewing for teenagers, especially boys, while others believe it fails to dig deep enough into the brainwashing that spurs Jamie’s behaviour.
According to Netflix’s ‘Most Popular English TV’ list, the show has now found itself at number four, having amassed over 114 million views already. It initially found itself at number nine on the list when it was released, but it has since shot up the ranking.
The show has already beaten titles like 2020’s The Queen’s Gambit and several seasons of the hugely popular period drama Bridgerton, which also debuted that same year.
The show gained 17.8 million views just last week, with the hype surrounding the show seemingly yet to die down. It marked the debut acting appearance for Owen Cooper, who plays the volatile Jamie, which has already led him to a role in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film Wuthering Heights as the younger version of Jacob Elordi’s Heathcliff.
Adolescence stars Graham as Jamie’s dad, while Ashley Walters, Faye Marsay, Erin Doherty, and Hannah Walters also appear throughout the four-part series.
