There is a new action film storming on Netflix. It is a terribly hammy prison thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, 50 Cent, and Dave Bautista—the holy trifecta of cinematic ham.
Escape Plan: The Extractors recently claimed a spot at the eighth position on Netflix’s top ten films list in the United States. The week between January 15th and 21st, 2024, saw the star rising in this 2019 film.
Directed and co-written by John Herzfeld, the film serves as the third and final instalment in the Escape Plan film series, following its predecessors, Escape Plan (2013) and Escape Plan 2: Hades (2018). Escape Plan: The Extractors, released straight-to-DVD in the United States on July 2nd, 2019.
The star-studded cast is led by the iconic Rocky star Sylvester Stallone, who reprises his role alongside familiar faces such as 50 Cent, Bautista, and Jaime King. Additionally, the film introduces new talents to the series, including Max Zhang, Harry Shum Jr, Malese Jow, and Devon Sawa.
The story follows Stallone’s Ray Breslin, founder of Breslin Security, who finds himself entangled in a high-stakes rescue mission when a close associate is kidnapped and held captive in a high-tech prison. As the plot plods along, the audience is taken on a ride that ideally should’ve been full of suspense but has generic action sequences amid moments of unexpected alliances.
Made on a modest budget of $3.6million, the movie managed to recover its production costs. It grossed $1.8million theatrically in select countries and made a domestic gross of $2.9million.
Despite its less than lukewarm critical reception, Escape Plan: The Extractors continues to find an audience. The film’s execution and predictable plot elements can leave you wanting more. Or perhaps this is exactly what you needed to watch while you went about mindlessly scrolling on your phone after a long day at work.
