What’s Deborah and Shaquille’s backstory in A Different World?
A Different World takes viewers back to the corridors of Hillman College, focusing on a new generation that almost repeats the mistakes of the generation before, particularly evident through Deborah and Shaquille’s will-they, won’t-they romance. As it turns out, the spark between them goes way back before college. Shaquille eventually tells Amir and Kojo that the timing never really worked out.
Despite the past obstacles, Deborah and Shaquille decide to try dating now that they’re both at Hillman. However, complications and miscommunications follow. It’s not until episode eight that fans learn what went wrong during the previous spring.
Deborah lost her virginity to Shaquille, but their romantic outing took a terrible turn when the warehouse party they attended right after experienced a massive fire. Both parents’ parties were furious. However, Shaquille had to face way more, with his father snatching away his phone, laptop, and credit cards. In short, he simply had no way to contact Deborah. And since she never heard from him, she assumed their night together was not as special to him as she thought.
While that underscores the immense lack of communication, the behaviour persists when Deborah asks whether Shaquille saw anyone since their night together. Although the latter’s reassurance results in Deborah confessing her love for Shaquille, that’s unfortunately not a cue for happily-ever-after. Soon after, she stumbles onto Shaquille’s hoodie in Candace’s room, and the series saves the tense confrontation until the finale.
They eventually break up, breaking quite a few hearts on the other end of the screen. But the developments that follow put a big question mark on whether there’s a chance of reconciliation.
