A Broadway musical about Princess Diana is coming to Netflix

Diana: The Musical was a highly anticipated Broadway musical whose debut got further delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The musical will now reportedly stream on Netflix ahead of its debut this October 1, 2021.

Based on the luminous life of Princess Diana, the ‘People’s Princess’ who was loved and adored by all and, at whose tragic demise, the entire nation wept bitterly, the musical was scheduled to debut on Broadway in March 2021. However, due to the raging pandemic, the date has been postponed to December of this year.

While people will still be able to watch the musical in New York in the winter, they will be able to stream the musical on Netflix months before.

The production will be filmed without an audience at Longacre Theater with the original Broadway cast, including Jeanna de Waal as Diana, the Princess of Wales. Jeanna is no stranger to Broadway musicals, having starred in Kinky Boots and later in Carrie.

“To bring Diana to life onstage is obviously a huge privilege,” said Jeanna as she gushed over this brilliant opportunity to Marie Claire. She further revealed that although she felt “very daunted by the prospect”, she hoped to leave an imprint in people’s minds as they witnessed her performance and, in turn, learn more about the Princess and “what she did for the world”.

Jeanna added, “She made everyone feel special, from the highest person to the lowest-ranking person, and I think we want to celebrate her.” Roe Hartrampf is set to play the role of Prince Charles, while Tony-winning actress Judy Kaye will take on Queen Elizabeth II, and Erin Dave has been cast as Camilla Parker Bowles.

About their Netflix debut, the show producers expressed their excitement and said that they were “thrilled” to be finally able to “share both the film and the Broadway musical with the world”.

“The chance to share our show, first with Netflix’s global audience, and then welcoming a live audience back on Broadway, is something we’ve all been dreaming about for more than a year,” they added.

On September 24, 2021, ahead of its October release, viewers will get a glimpse into the track recordings via Diana: The Musical Original Cast Recording.
