Netflix has once again hit a home run in bringing back a forgotten romantic comedy to visibility, as most of you must have already noticed the sudden resurgence of 27 Dresses on the global top 10 movies chart.

But in case you were unaware, the 2008 rom-com, directed by Anne Fletcher, recently appeared on the most popular movies chart on Netflix in the week dated March 9th to March 15th, at number nine. After amassing 2.6million views worldwide, it is currently one of the top ten titles trending in 54 countries!

While Netflix has always been a streaming force to be reckoned with, this isn’t the first time that titles have breathed new life due to it.

The primary reason behind the rom-com resurgence is actually quite simple: 27 Dresses was added to Netflix on March 13th. As is tradition with the streaming mogul, whenever comfort classics from the 2000s join the platform, they rarely miss the chance to hit home with the audience. Needless to say, what follows next is subscribers rediscovering the gem or newer and younger viewers watching them for the first time.

Although 27 Dresses is the only romantic comedy to make it to this week’s Top 10 list, despite being the odd one out, it organically makes itself right at home. Wonder why? Because even though the film was released nearly two decades earlier, the rebirth of the Y2K aesthetic, followed by its rom-com core ideal, has made the film a viral subject for contemporary memes, in turn, sparking curiosity in audiences on the heels of its streaming availability.

Plus, 27 Dresses arrived on Netflix at the perfect time. After the heavy award season filled with intense, high-stakes drama, fans are turning to “easy-on-the-brain” movies for a much-needed pivot. And since this one’s a no-brainer with no additional demands of compulsive cognitive commitment, it’s no surprise that the movie is actually thriving on Netflix.

Then again, considering 27 Dresses made the cut for this week’s trending Netflix chart despite just two days of availability, it is most likely to rise further up.

But when her younger sister coincidentally ends up exchanging rings with the man she loves, her life turns upside down. The rom-com has forever been a cult favourite and a cultural touchstone of the beloved genre.
