‘Puss in Boots – The Last Wish’: the 2022 animated adventure comedy climbing the Netflix charts
Some genres find momentum in their designated seasons, but animated comedies find a place in people’s watchlists 365 days a year. But if you think that’s a stretch, Netflix’s most popular movies chart holds proof, with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish rising through the ranks.
During the week of September 14th to September 20th, the 2022 animated adventure comedy returned to Netflix’s international and regional charts. With 2.9million views, it is currently ranked seventh globally, right above KPop Demon Hunters, A Minecraft Movie, and Shrek.
But in the United States, the animated comedy Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has cracked the top five this week, ranking fourth. While the weekly trendsetters Stateside have 40% of entries from the universally loved genre, Joel Crawford’s movie clearly has an upper hand this time around.
Serving as the sequel to Puss in Boots and based on a Shrek 2 character, The Last Wish centres on the titular fearless feline, whose victory celebrations against a giant come with a terrible reality check: the fearless feline has officially burned through eight of his nine lives, resulting in his retirement to become a house cat.
But when Goldilocks and the Bears arrive seeking his help to steal a map to the Wishing Star from Jack Horner, a race against time ensues to find the star.
Although this is not the first time the 2022 sequel has made itself at home on Netflix charts, its present resurgence is undoubtedly driven by its recent arrival on the platform. Universal and DreamWorks’ titles usually cycle on and off Netflix, as the service acquires streaming rights through licensing agreements.
While some movies may not always be lucky enough to return to Netflix once that agreement expires, animated comedies are simply a league above.
Unlike standard children’s animated movies, The Last Wish has drawn both kids and adults. The former stream it repeatedly for obvious reasons; adults tune in for the sharp humour and complex mortality themes, often treating animation as a time capsule that transports them straight back to childhood.
Whether adults choose the film for casual viewing or a fun retreat, the important thing is that the film retains its cultural reputation even on streaming. So, even if you’re not a fan of animation, take the chance with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and thank us later!
