It feels like 2023 has only just started, but January has already passed us by. Many of us will have watched the cold month leave us from the warmth of our own homes, where Netflix is consumed like a hot cup of tea.
The most popular TV series from the month just passed was Season 2 of the comedy-drama series Ginny & Georgia with Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey. Telling the story of a teenager who yearns for her family to lay down their roots in New England after years on the run, Ginny & Georgia has proved to be a surprise hit for the streaming service. However, Netflix is yet to confirm the future arrival of season three.
Number two is an altogether more familiar title, with the Addams Family spin-off show, Wednesday, holding out for its tenth week in the Netflix top ten. Starring the rising star Jenna Ortega, who will soon be making an appearance in Scream VI, Wednesday has proven to be a massive hit for Netflix, sparking the arrival of a brand new figurehead for the streaming service in the form of the show’s gothic title character.
Elsewhere, the critically acclaimed new arrival Lockwood & Co., written and adapted for the screen by the Attack the Block director Joe Cornish, failed to get any higher than sixth in the list of the ten most popular series on Netflix. Whilst this might disappoint the streaming service, the series already looks to have attracted a loyal legion of fans, and with the critical success of the show, a second season could indeed be on the cards.
Right at the bottom of the bunch is the limited series Kaleidoscope, starring Tati Gabrielle, Rosaline Elbay, Giancarlo Esposito and Jai Courtney. Called “grade-A entertainment” by none other than Stephen King, the show is designed to be watched in any order, with the story following the largest heist ever attempted, following the many eccentric minds that make the daring plan so dangerous yet so irresistible.
