The 10 most popular series to watch on Netflix this week: August 2024

August ought not to be the prime time to sit and watch television. The days are warm, and the nights are long, but with the quality offerings that Netflix have strewn across the streaming service, it can be hard not to shut the curtains early on and settle in for a series or two.

This week, Netflix subscribers have been eating up the service’s series in full force, and looking across the most popular shows, there’s an impressive wide spread. The top spot is shared this week between A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, based on Holly Jackson’s novel of the same name, and The Umbrella Academy.

Netflix recently acquired the former show, so it’s the first time that it’s being enjoyed off BBC Three, while The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic book series by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way, is currently in its fourth season, and both series have amassed a healthy 8.4 million views.

Olympics fever still seems to be burning hot as Simone Biles Rising, naturally focusing on the gymnastics megastar, has crept up into third place, ahead of the Netflix dating show Love is Blind: UK, in which contestants meet and fall in love with one another without ever actually meeting face to face.

Netflix’s Kids is as popular as ever, especially considering the summer holidays are in full swing, with Gabby’s Dollhouse coming in at an impressive fifth place, followed swiftly by podcaster, comedian and former TV presenter Joe Rogan’s new comedy special Burn the Boats.

Heading into the bottom half of the most popular series is the docuseries Unsolved Mysteries, through which audiences are treated to investigations of cold cases and paranormal phenomena, starkly different from the number seven series of the week, Cobra Kai, the sequel to the original Karate Kid movies.

It’s another dating show that comes in in ninth position; Too Hot to Handle brings together ten sexy individuals who put themselves through increasingly intimate challenges without being able to make any sexual contact with one another. The historical drama Vikings finally propped up the list, which is just about as far away as the occurrences of Too Hot to Handle as one could imagine.
