The 10 most popular movies to watch on Netflix this week: August 2024

There is always a new movie to watch on Netflix, whether that be a beloved classic, an original title made specifically for the platform, or a hidden gem from the past few years. The streamer is constantly updating its roster with films, and this week, a brand new release is sitting at the top of its ‘most streamed movies’ list.

With its one-hour and 27-minute runtime, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie racked up 19,500,000 viewing hours last week. It was released on August 2nd and marks the first in a series of spin-off movies in the Spongebob Squarepants universe. Clearly, children and those who grew up watching the beloved animated show have tuned in to see what Spongebob and Sandy Cheeks are up to now.

In the second spot is another kid’s movie, Ferdinand, which was released in 2017. With characters voiced by a range of actors, including John Cena and David Tennant, the movie perhaps should’ve been more popular upon release, but it was a massive box-office failure. It seems as though the movie is finally achieving the success it didn’t receive seven years ago.

With it being the summer holidays, it’s no surprise that there are three more children’s movies in the top ten, The Bad Guys, Trolls Band Together, and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.

The rest of the top ten is made up of action and thriller movies, with Kingsman: The Secret Service, released back in 2014, sitting at number three. It has been watched for a whopping 15,000,000 hours. Its sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is currently at number six, watched for 11,4000,000 hours.

The British franchise is hugely popular, with a prequel, The King’s Man, hitting cinema screens in 2021, as well as the spin-off movie Argylle emerging (and flopping) in 2024. Judging by Netflix’s top ten, however, it seems like audiences love the original movies the best.

Both Jack Reacher and its sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, are in the top ten, too. The movies, both starring Tom Cruise, were released in 2012 and 2016, respectively, but they’re now enjoying some renewed popularity on Netflix.
