Whilst you were hibernating in your house watching Netflix, you may have only just realised that January has already flown us by. With a somewhat captive audience, the streaming service managed to finish on a high, with 55 million hours of the brand-new comedy You People being viewed by audiences from across the globe.
Starring Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill, You People jumped straight into the top spot of the ten most popular movies on Netflix, despite its lack of critical success. Telling the story of a new couple and their families, who try to navigate clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences, the new comedy has managed to magnetise a substantial audience, with both lead stars being beloved cinematic comedians.
Meanwhile, number two on the top ten list is occupied by the Lily Collins mystery-thriller Inheritance, co-starring Simon Pegg, which tells the story of the patriarch of a wealthy and influential family who suddenly passes away and leaves his daughter with a dangerous inheritance. Also starring Chace Crawford, Michael Beach and Connie Nielsen, this crime tale is enjoying its second week in the top ten.
Though, Inheritance’s two-week stint in the top 10 is rookie numbers compared to the six-week run of Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which has proved to be worth the extensive marketing campaign from Netflix. Sure, the film is slowly sliding down the ranks, but this is to be expected of a movie that has spent so long at the top of the pile. A critical and commercial hit; expect plenty more Knives Out mysteries in the future.
Elsewhere, the original Puss in Boots movie has gained tremendous traction amidst the release of the surprise hit Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, with over six million hours worth of the animated film consumed last week. Speaking of animation, the Illumination Entertainment flick Sing is also enjoying a staggering hold, having enjoyed eight weeks in the streaming service’s top ten.
