The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: September 2024

With a Netflix subscription, users have access to a wide variety of movies, and the service updates their titles every day to keep things fresh for viewers. New movies arrive every week, both classics and fresh titles, with some proving to be more successful than others.

This week, several new releases have come to dominate Netflix’s top ten chart, while movies that have been on the streamer for longer have also found a place on the list. Coming in at number ten is a classic early 2000s rom-com, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. It has been in the charts for the past two weeks since it arrived on Netflix – clearly fans are wanting a dose of nostalgia or simply some romantic drama to indulge in as the autumn nights draw in.

As the summer holidays come to an end, viewers might see less children’s movies in the top ten. For now though, a few titles have still made it in, such as the animated film Migration from last year, directed by Benjamin Renner. In sixth place is Sonic the Hedgehog, the 2020 film starring James Marsden. The movie has been in the chart for ten weeks straight, racking up 9.7 million hours watched in a week.

We’re moving into the top five now with Incoming, a teen comedy released near the end of August, which has gained 6.0 million views in the past week. Then, at four, is Dead Sea, a crime thriller/horror which was released in July. It has garnered 6.7 million views this week.

Another new release is next, The Union, which sees Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry play high school sweethearts who are reunited after the latter’s character, a spy, decides to recruit her ex-boyfriend to carry out a secret mission that will drag them both deep into the criminal underworld.

In second place is The Deliverance, which has come to Netflix after being released in theatres earlier in August. It stars Glenn Close, Andra Day, and Rob Morgan, and was directed by Lee Daniels, who also helmed Precious and The United States vs Billie Holliday.

Taking the top spot is Rebel Ridge, a new Netflix Original which has been viewed 31,200,000 times. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, the film follows a former Marine who attempts to bail his cousin out of jail, only to be accused of his money stemming from illegal activity.
