10 most popular films on Netflix this week: November 2022

Netflix is founded on the premise of great movies straight to your door. While the original notion of sending DVDs through the mail is long gone, the streaming platform still regularly delivers perfect cinema to our couches; however, now, they usually make the movies too. This week’s most popular films are another demonstration of Netflix’s growing weight in the movie production business.

This week is a tale of new entries, as six of the top ten enjoy their first week in the charts. Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain’s chilling tale of murder, The Good Nurse, is no longer the main attraction on Netflix, sitting in second place and pulling in 36 million hours of viewing. However, far and away, the most popular film on the streaming platform this week is a barnstormer from millie Boby Brown.

Enola Holmes 2 was always likely to gather interest following the success of the Stranger things star’s first turn in the role of Sherlock Holmes’ precocious teen sister. Starring Brown alongside henry Cavill as Sherlock, the film is an undoubted romp.

Our review noted: “One of the best things about the film is how it loosely bases the plot on true events of 1888 that saw the famed strike by matchstick-making girls. The motif of matchsticks and fire is constantly used throughout the film as it represents the young girls in factories who are oppressed and endangered daily before they finally rage against authority. The film is also a great exploration of class politics; it is amazing to see how well they balance such nuances within a light-hearted plot that weaves in humour, violence, mystery and romance simultaneously.”

Perhaps because of the excitement around the second instalment of Holmes’ story, the first edition of the film has also crept into this week’s top ten, which means the growing franchise brought in 75 million hours of viewing between them.

Also in this week’s top ten, and filling the role of “curious film from the past being rediscovered” is the Jason Statham and Jet Li action thriller War. The official synopsis reads: “When ruthless hitman Rogue slaughters an FBI agent and his family, the dead man’s partner, Jack Crawford, vows revenge. After three years of hunting shadows, Crawford is no closer to his prey but remains obsessed with the chase, despite having driven away his wife and son. When Rogue finally resurfaces as a gunman for San Francisco’s Triads, Crawford leaps at the chance to take down his nemesis.”
