The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: May 2023

If you want to curl up with a good film, you can’t go wrong with Netflix. Supplying us with a range of new and classic titles, the streamer continues to provide us with an array of content for our viewing pleasure. If you’re still struggling to decide what to put on, however, this countdown of the most popular films on offer is a good place to start.

This week’s top ten starts with The Father, which stars Anthony Hopkins as an elderly man who refuses help from his daughters. As his mind begins to deteriorate, he starts doubting the sincerity of his loved ones. With a star-studded cast and a dynamite script, it’s no wonder The Father has raked in over five million hours of viewing time in its first week on Netflix.

Above that, at number nine, we’ve got the second instalment of A Quiet Place, in which the Abbott family – now without their father’s protection – continue to fight for survival in absolute silence, venturing into unknown territory, where further dangers await them. That’s just below this week’s number three: A Tourist’s Guide To Love, an off-beat romantic comedy about a travel executive falling for her Vietnamese ex-pat tour guide.

At number seven, we’ve got The Tournament, Scott Mann’s action thriller about a secret competition organised by the world’s most powerful men. The catch? They need to murder their rivals to secure the multi-million dollar prize. That’s sat below the animated family adventure The Croods and this week’s number five, The Dilemma – starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James.

This week’s number four, Wrong Place, stars Bruce Willis as a former small-town police officer trying to take out the methamphetamines cook who wants to silence him before he can deliver an eyewitness testimony. That’s just below Ula Grosbard’s 1999 exploration of family trauma, The Deep End of The Ocean.

Thing’s are a little sunnier at number two, where Jason Moore’s 2012 musical comedy Pitch Perfect is sat below this week’s number one, A Man Called Otto. Starring Tom Hanks, this touching film tells the story of grumpy widower Otto Anderson, who forms an unlikely friendship with a quick-witted pregnant woman called Marisol. From the moment her family moves in next door, it’s clear Otto has met his match.
