The 10 most popular films on Netflix this week: October 2024
Netflix adds new movies to its global platform daily, so the streaming giant’s weekly top ten list is constantly in flux. Consider this week’s list, which encompasses October 21st to 27th. Of the ten films, only one has been a mainstay in the chart for a lengthy period. The rest of the list comprises four brand new entries, two films in their second weeks in the top ten, and three that have been there for three weeks. It’s a testament to the streamer’s commitment to regularly delivering new material – and its audience’s willingness to watch these new offerings.
The number one film on the chart – which shot straight to the top of the pile in its first two days of release – is Don’t Move, a horror thriller produced by Sam Raimi (Evil Dead). It stars Kelsey Asbille as a grieving mother who is injected with a paralysing agent by mysterious killer Finn Wittrock and must do everything in her power to get away from him before her body shuts down completely. More than 20 million horror fans streamed the movie on its debut weekend on the platform – the equivalent of 31 million hours viewed.
Two of the other new entries on the list are testaments to Netflix’s truly global appeal. South African romantic drama Happiness Is hit number seven on the chart with 3.7million views, while real-life Nigerian thriller Hijack ’93 made it to number nine with 3.2million people tuning in. The final new entry, though, spoke to the platform’s ability to deliver major blockbusters for the whole family. More than five million kids streamed the latest adventure from Jack Black’s beloved martial arts bear Po, allowing Kung Fu Panda 4 to crash the list at number five.
Two films with women front and centre continued to have strong showings in the top ten. Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut Woman of the Hour racked up another 13.2 million views in its second week of release, while Laura Dern romancing Liam Hemsworth in Lonely Planet brought in 5.6 million views in its third week.
Two spaces were reserved in the chart for documentaries, with Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare continuing to captivate audiences in its second week of release. It reached number three, while The Menendez Brothers dropped to number eight. On a different note, the second entry in Tom Hardy’s bonkers Venom franchise closed out the top ten with 2.6 million views in its third week.
Finally, which film held steady at number four despite being on its 14th week in the chart? 2016’s beloved animated musical Sing, of course – and we reckon it will remain on the list for many more weeks to come.
